Why can’t I just be a business person? Not Mumpreneur etc.

This is a rant, and I am ok with that because it needs to be said. Being a MUM has nothing to do with why I am in business.
I am in business because I have the vision and the drive to create a business, lead a team and I am good at what I do. NOT because I am a MUM.
To my family, I am a Mum, Wife, Sister and Daughter.  To my friends, I am Linda, so I don’t know why in business I can’t just be a business person.
I love being a Mum don’t get me wrong, but it is labelled like Mumpreneur, Soloprenuer, etc. that are driving me mad at the moment.  Why can’t we just be business people?
Do we really need another label, and the pressure to be seen as fitting that label?
I am a person who is in business, as well as many other things too.  We should not be defined simply & singularly by the various roles we have within our lives,
I would love to know what others think on my short and sweet rant today…
It had to be said – I am business person when it comes to business.

    AMEN Linda!
I am not a mum, so the word mumpreneur doesn’t work for me, but any version of Entrepreneur – including the word entrepreneur seriously does my head in. When people ask me what I do, I say Im a outsourcing specialist or small business owner – because, that’s exactly what it is!
I did find a term over the weekend that I’m considering to maybe use. “Fulfilionaire” because Im fulfilling what ever the hell I want to.

Oh Linda, thank you for airing this one – i completely agree. I hate the fact that a man is just a business man, yet a woman as you said is labelled in so many different ways. Why can a woman in business just be labeled a woman?

Well said Linda and agree with you Suzanne.
I find these labels pretentious and in the case of Mumpreneur, a tad belittling. We don’t hear nearly as much about Dadpreneurs, no – they are business men.
These labels do far more harm than good when it comes to outside perception of a legitimate business to be taken seriously v’s a hobby for pocket money.

Yes! I loathe these labels, too. The parentrepreneur, the mumpreneur, any vomitous take on this word makes me cringe. My family has status has nothing to do with my business. I am all for ditching the labels.

You have absolutely nailed it! There should be no connection unless you are actually an entrepreneur of baby making, otherwise it doesn’t make sense. We don’t connect parenting to any other career. We don’t say someone is a Mum Estate Agent or a Human Mumsources Manager, so why connect parenting to something totally unrelated? I am a step-parent and a business owner, so perhaps that makes me a step-mum-preneur…
Like Stephanie says above, Dadpreneurs aren’t really a thing.
Keep doing what you do, Linda! You’re great!

Why…Because as Mums we answer to almost everything we are called, multi task , always have a can do / will do attitude and just get things done, on deadline!
Too often Mum’s are “dumbed” down ; hence a mumpreneur seems to have more brains and success than a more-often than not dumbed down mum.
Drives me crazy that dynamic smart successful women just can’t be businesswomen…just like men are businessmen.
Now don’t get me even started on why all the mother’s day events at school are 1030am morning teas vs father’s day events being a 7am breakfast….
